My Love-Hate Relationship with Social Media

Am I the only one in a love-hate relationship with social media? I deleted Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Discord apps off my phone last week, added them back this week, and deleted them again today! It’s not that I don’t like using them because I do. It’s that I don’t want them consuming my valuable time.

According to the Quote Investigator, that quote is also attributed to John Lennon, Laurence J. Peter, and Marthe Troly-Curtin in her book Phrynette.

The research behind that explanation is exactly why I don’t fare well with social media. My mind is often like a squirrel chasing a rainbow around the playground and down the rabbit hole!

I have way too much to accomplish in this short life to let ten-second videos take over my mind. The over-stimulation of social media leads to burnout. It puts my creativity in a headlock until I tap out.

Social media incentives don’t make it easy to stop. Instagram offered to pay me fifty dollars to make five reels — that’s close to what I made writing on Medium all year! The idea of getting a chunk…
