Reader favorites from 100+ blog posts

What is the summit of success to a writer? When a reader not only reads what they write but likes, comments, shares, engages with what they write. We get a fresh mountain air high when we find out something we wrote inspired someone or positively affected their lives. I don’t know if my writing will ever change the world, but who knows what happens when you share your gifts. I believe when we pursue our passion, the universe conspires on our behalf. …

Medium challenges writers

Photo by Rainier Ridao on Unsplash

I used to be obsessed with reality talent shows. The Gong Show, Star Search, American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, The X Factor, Dancing with the Stars, and So You Think You Can Dance. I loved how those shows provided an opportunity for aspiring artists to showcase their passion.

Medium’s new writing challenge with star-studded judges makes me think of it as a talent show for writers!

Oh, the dream, to write from anywhere in the world, to get paid doing what we love — Medium offers that opportunity to top talent. Think that’s you? I did too. …

The Freedom Shortcut — simple three-step book launch marketing strategy

I have followed the Mikkelsen Twins (The Twins) since they popped up on my YouTube feed a few years ago. I love all the free content they share around audiobook publishing.

My goal is to put my books in audio format and upload them to ACX, the audiobook publishing division of Amazon. Readers like to consume content in different forms. Indie authors need to provide audio options to optimize sales.

I love listening to audiobooks and podcasts while I’m driving or working out. I’m thinking of making my blog posts…

Operation Lose Weight, Gain Energy, Reverse Disease

I just finished a ten-day liquid fast, and the results were shocking!

Several years ago, I did a medically supervised liquid fast. It was long before protein drinks were a thing. I paid about $1200 for ‘prescribed’ liquid protein and a B12 shot. I drank the protein concoction but would slip up at eat something almost every day . I lost a few pounds but quickly gained it back when I went off the program and back to the Standard American Diet (SAD).

I’ve heard a lot about detox diets and have tried juicing a few times, but wimped out…

50+ Honorable Mentions. If you love chick flicks — from coming of age to risqué, romantic comedies, and feel-good movies, this list is for you

Photo by Jon Tyson on Unsplash

I love romantic movies, but I didn’t realize how much until I made a list of my top ten all-time favorite movies. It was hard to narrow down my list to ten, so I included 50+ honorable mentions for my fellow movie lovers!

1. Wuthering Heights

I wonder if a movie has more remakes than Wuthering Heights? I googled it, and yes, there are a few — A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens has been remade twenty times!

200+ writers weigh in on songs vs. silence

What music do you listen to when you write?

I asked that question in a couple of writer groups. Over 200 writers replied. I found their answers fascinating and wanted to share them with my writer friends!

I love music, but I often cannot listen to music when I write because it distracts me. I want to watch the video, find out about the singer and songwriter, read the comments, listen to other versions, and generally fall down the rabbit hole!

Instrumental music is okay, depending on the time of day and my caffeine level.

I like to listen to…

From South Carolina to Georgia to the entire Florida Coast

My husband and I decided to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary by taking a couple weeks to go lighthouse hunting. He is an avid lighthouse collector. I love anything nautical — from the salty air, sandy beaches, and turquoise water to dolphins, seahorses and mermaids.

Opposites attract definitely applies to my marriage. We are night and day in our interests 99 percent of the time, but when it comes to bodies of water we are both on board. Even there, we have our differences. He likes to jet ski, water ski, and go fast in boats. I prefer to cruise…

A poem of hope in the face of stark reality

Photo by Ben Hershey on Unsplash

This poem was inspired by Pink’s song Can We Pretend. I wanted to dig a little deeper into the issues we face today.

Can We Pretend

Can we pretend
social media highlights
are every day life?

Can we pretend
children aren’t starving,
neglected, or abused?

Can we pretend
Mother Earth will
pardon our plundering?

Can we pretend
animals don’t suffer
for our gluttonous pleasure?

Can we pretend
greed doesn’t
fuel disease?

Can we pretend
God is real
and loneliness isn’t?

Can we pretend
addiction doesn’t
destroy families?

Can we pretend
a kiss makes
the hurt go away?

Can we pretend
Superman saves the…

The answer to creative artists’ prayers or an investing nightmare

Photo by Thimo Pedersen on Unsplash

I love technology and trends, but I have missed the boat a million times on both since 1995. I remember the first time I heard about Apple, Amazon, and Google. I was among the first to jump ship from MySpace to Facebook. I was in Times Square on New Years’ Eve 1999, where I saw flashing neon billboard signs that read, “Buy Domains Now!”

I started an investment club after reading the Beardstown Ladies. We met once a month and rarely agreed on the investments. I always wanted to invest in tech. However, it was too risky for the majority…
